SpellQuizzer's Main Screen

Most of SpellQuizzer's functionality can be accessed from buttons on the main screen:

The "Quiz me on a list!" button is the only button that a student is likely to use. Click the "Quiz me on a list!" button to be quizzed on a stored spelling list. The Select Spelling List screen will be displayed to select which of the stored spelling lists the student will be quizzed on.
To create a new spelling list click the "Create a spelling list" button. You will be prompted to supply a name for the spelling list you are creating such as "Unit 1 List". See the Creating a Spelling List topic for more details on creating spelling lists.
To edit an existing spelling list (such as to add or remove words from the existing list or to change the stored reminder phrases or sound recordings for words in the list) click the "Edit a spelling list" button. This will bring up the Select a List screen which allows you to choose from the existing lists (if any) that have been stored to date. From there you are taken to the Create or Edit List screen. See the Creating a Spelling List topic for more details on how to create spelling lists.
To import a spelling list that was created by someone else using SpellQuizzer click the "Import spelling lists" button. This will bring up the Import List(s) screen where you can specify the exported SpellQuizzer file and the list or lists in that file that you wish to import. Typically, a teacher will make a SpellQuizzer export file and provide it to parents who are using SpellQuizzer at home. See the Importing a Spelling List topic for more details on how to import a spelling list.
To export one or more spelling lists to a file that other SpellQuizzer users can import click the "Export spelling lists" button. This will bring up the Export List(s) screen where you can specify the SpellQuizzer export file's name and location as well as which of your current spelling lists to include. A teacher can use the Export function of SpellQuizzer to share their students' weekly spelling lists with those parents who are using SpellQuizzer at home.
Clicking the Help button on the main screen brings up the Help file's table of contents. You can also bring up context-sensitive help for any screen in SpellQuizzer by pressing the F1 key on your keyboard or by clicking the Help button on the given screen.

The File menu of the SpellQuizzer main screen has several additional functions which you will likely need to use less often:

Selecting the "Specify Database Location..." menu item from the File menu allows you to switch to a different SpellQuizzer database. Most users will simply use the default database that SpellQuizzer starts for them when it is installed. But if you do need to change which SpellQuizzer database the software uses see the Specifying the Database Location topic.
Selecting the "Save Currently Open Database to New Location..." menu item from the File menu allows you to change the location that the currently used SpellQuizzer database is kept. Most users will simply leave the SpellQuizzer database in its default location but if you wish to move it (perhaps to a place where other users on the same network can access it) see the Saving the Database to a New Location topic.
Selecting the "Create New Database" menu item from the File menu allows you to create a new and empty SpellQuizzer database. If you do this you will be starting over from scratch. Most users will have no occasion for doing this but if you do need to then see the Creating a New Database help topic.
Selecting the "Edit Application Options" menu item from the File menu brings up the Options screen where you can enable password protection for SpellQuizzer (to prevent students from making changes to spelling lists), removed orphaned words from the SpellQuizzer database, compact the SpellQuizzer database to save space, change SpellQuizzer's logging behavior and make a copy of the application log file if problems are encountered. The Spelling Lists menu allows you to access all the same features as the buttons on the screen.

The Help menu allows you to bring up this help file's Table of Contents or Index views. Selecting the "Check For Program Updates" topic of the Help menu will open the default web browser for your computer and take you to the SpellQuizzer web site to check to see if you are using the current release of the software and if there is a free update available.
