Setting Application Options

Application options are set using the Options screen. To open the Options screen select "Edit Application Options..." from the File menu.

There are six tabs on the Options screen. The Security Tab of the Options screen allows you to enable password protection for SpellQuizzer. Once you have saved a password users will not be able to access selected functions of the software without first entering the password you specify. You can specify which functions you wish to restrict such as the ability to create, edit, import or export spelling lists as well as the ability to specify the database location, save the database to a new location or or create a new SpellQuizzer database. Once you have enabled password protection in SpellQuizzer no user will be able to access the SpellQuizzer Application Options screen without first entering the password you specify.

Generally, turning on password protection is only needed if you are concerned that a student might alter a list or change the SpellQuizzer database.

Important: If you turn on password protection be sure to write down the password you enter and keep it in a safe place. Once you have turned on password protection and clicked the OK button on the Options screen you will not be able re-open the Options screen without entering that password.

The Database tab of the Options screen allows you to clean up the SpellQuizzer database by deleting orphaned words that you do not plan to use again. There is no harm in leaving orphaned words in the database but deleting them can help to reduce the space taken up by the database on the hard drive. There is also a button for compacting the SpellQuizzer database. The database can grow quite large over time. It is a good idea to compact the database periodically to improve the database's efficiency. A good rule of thumb is to compact the database after every third spelling list is created.

The Logging tab of the Options screen allows you to turn verbose logging on and off. Normally it is fine to leave verbose logging turned off but if you are having problems with the software it is a good idea to turn this option on so that the log file that SpellQuizzer creates contains more information on what the software is doing.

If you are having problems with SpellQuizzer you can use the "Create a copy of the application log file..." button to copy the log file to a location on computer (such as the Desktop) to make it easy to send to SpellQuizzer support. You can reach SpellQuizzer support to get an email for sending logs by going to TedCoSoftware.com/Contact.htm.

The Sound Effects tab of the Options screen allows you to specify sound effects to be played at different events such as when a word is spelled correctly, when a word is misspelled or at the end of a quiz when the user has made zero errors. SpellQuizzer comes with several fun sound files you can use. You can also specify any sound file that is in the Windows Wave format (sound files ending in .wav).

The Audio Settings tab of the Options screen allows you to set the maximum recording time for each word you record when creating a spelling list. You can also open the Audio Adjustment screen from this screen to test and adjust audio recording levels.

The Spell Checker tab of the Options screen allows you to turn off warnings from SpellQuizzer's spelling checker on the List Creation and List Edit screens. If a word is not recognized by SpellQuizzer's built in dictionary of 350,000 common English words a "(not in dictionary)" warning is displayed beside the word that was entered. The dictionary recognizes both US and UK spellings. If you are using SpellQuizzer for non-English words you may wish to turn off the spell checker's warnings. You can turn off the spell checker's warnings by un-checking the box on the Spell Checker tab of the Options screen.
