The Security Tab

You may wish to prevent students from having access to key functions of SpellQuizzer. For instance, a teacher will typically want to prevent students from creating and editing lists or changing the SpellQuizzer database location. To limit which features of the software are available to others check the box on the Security tab of the Options screen (above) that reads "Enable password protection for the following features:". Then select which features you wish to protect and enter a password in each box above. Then click the OK button.

Important: Be sure to write down your password and keep it in a safe place. Once password protection has been turned on you will not be able to open the Options screen without entering the required password.

 

The Database Tab

The SpellQuizzer database can grow very large over time. One way to reduce the size of the database is to remove old spelling lists that you are certain you no longer need (see the Removing a Spelling List from the Database topic for instructions on how to do this). Once you remove a list the words that were in that list remain in the database in case you wish to re-add them to future lists. Words that are stored in the database but not associated with any list are called orphaned words. To delete orphaned words from the SpellQuizzer database you can click the "Specify Orphaned Words To Deluxe form Database" button on the Database tab of the Options screen. The Delete Orphaned Words screen will be displayed allowing you to specify which orphaned words to delete.

Another effective way to reduce the size of the SpellQuizzer database is to compact it. You can do this by clicking the "Compact SpellQuizzer Database" button on the Database tab of the Options screen. A good rule of thumb is to compact the database after every third spelling list is created.

 

The Logging Tab

SpellQuizzer creates a log file to record any problems the software encounters. The Logging tab of the Options scree (above) allows you to turn verbose logging on and off. Normally it is fine to leave verbose logging turned off but if you are having problems with the software it is a good idea to turn this option on so that the log file that SpellQuizzer creates contains more information on what the software is doing.

If you are having problems with SpellQuizzer you can use the "Create a copy of the application log file..." button to copy the log file to a location on computer (such as the Desktop) to make it easy to send to SpellQuizzer support. The Sound Effects Tab

SpellQuizzer can play sound effects for different events in the program. By default it will play the "Woo Hoo!" sound after a quiz is completed with zero spelling errors. You can customize SpellQuizzer to play a sound when the user spells a word correctly or incorrectly. Just check the box next to the event you want a sound played for. Then specify the sound file you wish played. Use the "..." button beside the sound file box to search for and identify the sound file you wish to associate with the given event. You can use the Test button below each sound file box to listen to the sound to see if you like it.

SpellQuizzer comes with several fun sound files you can use. We recommend that you play around with them and see which ones you like. Adding sound effects to software can make it more fun for the student. In addition to the sound files that are included with SpellQuizzer you can also specify any sound file that is in the Windows Wave format (sound files ending in .wav). You can find a lot of fun wave files by doing a Google search on "wave files".

 

The Audio Settings Tab

By default SpellQuizzer sets the maximum record time for a word to fifteen seconds. This is to help prevent the SpellQuizzer database from growing unnecessarily large since audio recordings can take up a lot of space. If you need more than fifteen seconds for your audio recordings you can increase the maximum permitted recording time by changing the value in the Recording Time Limit box.

Clicking the Adjust Audio and Recording Levels button brings up the Audio Adjustment screen which lets you test and change your computer's record and playback sound levels.

 

The Spell Checker Tab

By default SpellQuizzer checks the spelling of every word entered on the List Creation or List Edit screen. If a word is not recognized by SpellQuizzer's built in dictionary of 350,000 common English words a "(not in dictionary)" warning is displayed beside the word that was entered. The dictionary recognizes both US and UK spellings. If you are using SpellQuizzer for non-English words you may wish to turn off the spell checker's warnings. You can do that by un-checking the box on this tab of the Options screen.
