Creating List Screen

When you create a new spelling list the Creating List screen (above) is displayed. If you want the words presented to the student in a random order during quizzing then check the box that reads "Randomize list when testing". Otherwise the students will be quizzed on the words in the order that is saved in the list box on the left of the screen.

If you wish to add a word to this list from a previous list you already have stored in the SpellQuizzer database then click the "Click to select existing words from database" button. The Add Words from Database screen will be displayed allowing you to select which words to add.

Most of the time you will be adding words to a list one at a time. Make sure that the "Add new word" option is selected and enter the word's correct spelling in the box below the words "Word to add:". If you want SpellQuizzer to enforce case sensitivity when quizzing the student (such as you might desire in the case of a proper noun) then check the box that reads "Word is case-sensitive".

An optional reminder phrase can be entered which will be displayed to the student when they are quizzed. If you do not create a sound recording for the word then a reminder phrase must be entered. Be careful not to use the word in the reminder phrase.

If your PC has a sound card and microphone then you can make a sound recording of the word. To do this click the "Start" button and speak clearly into your PC's microphone. It is recommended that you speak the word and then use the word in a sentence. If the word you are entering is "house" you might record "House. We all live together in a house." After you finish speaking click the "Stop" button. You can click the "Play Back" button to have your recording played back. Clicking the Play button again starts a new recording replacing the last.

If the sound level is too low when you play back a recording you can click the "Adjust Audio and Recording Levels" button near the bottom of the screen to bring up the Audio Adjustment Screen and adjust your computer's audio and recording levels. Make sure that your PC's speakers are turned on and that the sound on them is not turned down too low.

Once you have finished entering all the information on the word click the "Add Word" button to add it to the spelling list. The word will appear in the list box on the left of the screen. To make a change to a word after adding it (to change the reminder phrase or sound recording for instance) you can click on the word in the list. The "Update selected word" option will be selected allowing you to make changes. Click the "Update Word" button to save the changes. You can not change the spelling of a word that has been added. If the spelling is incorrect then select the misspelled word in the list and click the "Remove selected word" button below the list to remove it. You can then re-add the word with the correct spelling.

Once you have added at least two words to the list you can change the order of a word by selecting the word in the list box and using the "Move Up" or "Move Down" buttons below the list. This will change the order that the words presented to the student during a quiz (so long as you don't have the "Randomize list when testing" option selected).

Once you have finished adding words to the spelling list click the OK button at the bottom of the screen to save the list. You can now be quizzed on the list by clicking the "Quiz me on a list!" button on SpellQuizzer's main screen.

 

Editing List Screen

When editing an existing list the "Editing List" screen (above) is displayed. To make a change to a word that is already in the list select the word in the list box on the left. You can then change the stored reminder phrase for the word, turn on or off case-sensitivity or make a new audio recording for the word. Click the "Update Word" button once the desired changes have been made. You can not change the spelling of a word once it has been added to a list. If a word was entered with the incorrect spelling you must select the word in the list on the left of the screen and click the "Remove selected word" button below the list. Then you can re-add the word by selecting the "Add new word" option.

You can change the order that a word will be presented to the student when quizzing by selecting the word in the list box and using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons below the list. This will only make a difference as long as the "Randomize list when testing" option is not turned on.
